Anicka Yi’s practice relates to synthetic biology, bio-engineering, extinction, and bio-fiction. Her work examines concepts of “the bio politics of the senses” or how assumptions and anxieties related to gender, race, and class shape physical perception.
Anicka Yi’s recent institutional solo exhibitions include the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, USA; Fridericianum, Kassel, Germany; Kunsthalle Basel, Belgium; List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, Massachusetts; The Kitchen, New York and The Cleveland Museum of Art, all in USA. Her work has also been included in group exhibitions at the 2016 Okayama Art Summit, Japan; the National Museum for Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C., USA; the 11th Gwangju Biennale, South Korea; the 13th Fellbach Triennial, Germany; Fundação de Serralves, Portugal; Taipei Biennial 2014, Taiwan; 12th Biennale de Lyon, France; Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, USA; Museum fur Gegenwartskunst, Basel, Switzerland and Sculpture Center, New York, USA among other galleries and institutions. In 2011, she received The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award. She was awarded the 2016 Hugo Boss Prize and presented a solo exhibition at Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York in April 2017.
