GABRÍELA FRIÐRIKSDÓTTIR
Born 1971 in Reykjavík, Iceland
Lives in Reykjavík
…Inside-out is a good way to describe what goes on in Gabríela’s art. Since 2004 the focus of her work has been on a series of highly-produced videos, laden with symbols and heavy with an air of archaic mystery; though she continues to paint, draw and exhibit sculpture.
Jón Proppé, an excerpt from the text Unlocking Hidden Worlds
Gabríela Friðriksdóttir blurs the lines between the occult and natural worlds to create dream-like environments for viewers to explore and within which to find connections. She creates fictional cosmologies rooted in her country’s isolating, melancholic landscape, where stories of creation come together with surrealism, horror films, and even heavy metal music. She works between video, sculpture, drawing, performance, painting and writing. Gabríela Friðriksdóttir studied at the Iceland Academy of the Arts and the AVU in Prague. In 2005, she represented Iceland at the 51st Venice Biennale. Her work has been exhibited at the Migros Museum in Zurich, Centre George Pompidou Paris, Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt and at La Biennale de Lyon in 2013.
