Athena Papadopoulos
Born in 1988 in Toronto, Canada
Lives in London
In Athena Papadopoulos’ A Diabetic Menagerie, a configuration of legs leans confidently against the wall. A clique of stitched and sutured figures, these dismembered limbs their skins made of bruised wools in pinks, browns and blues have positioned themselves alluringly and self assertively atop a row of tiles. At their heeled feet, the indigestible and destructive objects of their affection and desire accumulate. The gangrenous group is caught waiting, gossiping, contaminating and confiding in each other. Encountering these fragmented characters surrogates of the feminine self, interrogates “looking” as a way of structuring and naturalizing the social dynamics performed by Papadopoulos’ gendered characters.
